A couple of things I notice right off the bat. First, the nose provides an overwhelming caramel and leather aroma that is overpowering yet understated for what it is. Specifically, it overpowers anything else that may be hiding, yet still does not provide a full, powerful nose.
The taste of this bourbon furthers that; a healthy does of heavier flavors like leather and oak, with a slight underbelly of caramel and sweet. It goes down rather smoothly with a fairly long burn.
MSRP puts this bourbon at $125. Right off the bat that is going to be a no from me. When doing research on this bottle, one thing stands out: no age statement, mash bill or any story about that bottle that is unique beyond its homage to the Bourbon Confiscation of 1916.
The reality is, none of that goes into my decision on passing on the bottle. I did very much enjoy this bourbon and if I came across it, I would happily drink it again. What I struggle with is having an MSRP of $125 and a market value north of $170 on a “decent” bottle of bourbon with a non-existent background or story. If you find it in a bar, it is absolutely a must try. That being said, humbly, this bottle should be no more than $75. Remember, enjoy, and drink safely.
